The Eland is by far the largest African Antelope and has ox-like characteristics.  Male eland can often weigh from 900-200lbs and range from 5ft to 6 ft at the shoulders.  Females are slightly smaller.  Adult body size is reached at 5 years.  Eland habitat sub desert, savanna, woodlands, grasslands and mountaintops.  Eland typically feed of foliage.  The Eland is known for forming large herds as many as 500 members.  During calving season the females form nursing groups that include the yearlings.  Eland are easily tamed and their meat and milk are perfectly suitable for human consumption.  In the 1950s eland were tamed for dairy produce and were effectively managed in dairy stalls.
